Man wanted in St. Paul shooting surrenders

The man wanted for questioning in the shooting death of a 15-year-old St. Paul teenager has surrendered to police.

Police said charges could be filed Thursday against Alfredo "Freddie" Gutierrez-Gonzales in the death of Jacob MacKenzie.

Police say Gonzales shot MacKenzie with a semi-automatic rifle early Sunday morning. It happened at a home located near the 500 block of Concord Street in St. Paul, where MacKenzie lived and Gonzales sometimes stayed.

Gonzales had been missing since the shooting.

Monday, MacKenzie's family made a plea for Gonzales to turn himself in. The victim’s family told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS they consider Gonzales a part of their extended family. He's the boyfriend of MacKenzie's cousin.

Police said the shooting might turn out to be accidental.

"We don't know. The big thing is there is a lot of open holes in this that we just don't know until we get hold of Freddy. We can talk to him and find out, tell us what happened," explained St. Paul Police spokesman Peter Panos.

Police said they don’t believe a fight or disagreement precipitated the shooting. Ten people were in the St. Paul home at the time of the shooting.
