Star Tribune eyes newsroom cuts

A union representative says the Star Tribune is considering a $2.5 million cut in its annual newsroom budget.

Fine arts reporter Graydon Royce, of the newspaper’s Newspaper Guild unit, says the proposal was put forth as part of contract negotiations with newsroom workers. He says no decisions have been made. The current contract expires July 31st.

The newspaper declined to comment.

Earlier this month, the Star Tribune announced it had hired a private equity firm to advise it but disputed a published report suggesting it is "on the brink of bankruptcy."
