Rep. Michele Bachmann has a new explanation for media accounts about comments that she made on cable TV suggesting that Barack Obama and other members of Congress may be "anti-American."
She’s calling them an "urban legend."
The Minnesota Republican appeared Tuesday night on Fox News’ show with Sean Hannity and Alan Colmes. Colmes, the show’s resident liberal, read a transcript of Bachmann’s quote from her appearance on Chris Matthews’ "Hardball" show on MSNBC before the election. Colmes also offered to have her watch the video of her remarks. But the segment ended before Bachmann could fully respond.
In her appearance on "Hardball," Bachmann said Obama "may have anti-American views" and that reporters should investigate whether other congressional Democrats may be "anti-America."
Reminded of those remarks Tuesday night, Bachmann suggested, as she has before, that she was baited and trapped. She said that created an "urban legend" about what she says she really said.
"What I said was, ’Do your job,’" Bachmann said. "That’s what I said."
Bachmann, who has become a regular conservative commentator on cable TV talk shows, also criticized Democratic Senate candidate Al Franken’s role in Minnesota’s Senate race recount. Franken is seeking a review of some rejected absentee ballots.
"He wants to stuff the ballot box with rejected ballots," said Bachmann, adding that the dispute "calls into question what the record is and who’s watching the books."
