Two Apple Valley high school students are suspected of defacing the portraits of three former governors at the state Capitol.
Authorities identified the male students after other students contacted officials. State Patrol Lt. Robert Meyerson said one of the boys has confessed.
The portraits of former Govs. Jesse Ventura, Harold LeVander and Elmer L. Andersen were damaged with a red, felt-tip marker.
The Minnesota Historical Society has repaired the portraits. The Ventura and Andersen portraits were hanging at the Capitol again Tuesday; the LeVander painting should be returned to its spot within a week, said Bill Keyes, a spokesman for the agency. Keyes said the total cost of repair was $175.
The case will be referred to prosecutors once the investigation is complete, Meyerson said.
The value of the damage means any charges probably would be handled as misdemeanors.
