LA Times Apologizes for Story on Rapper

The Los Angeles Times has apologized for an article on the 1994 assault on rapper Tupac Shakur that was based on apparently phony documents.

The newspaper’s editor and the writer apologized in a story on the paper’s Web site late Wednesday for the article that implicates associates of Sean "Diddy" Combs in the attack.

The apologies followed an investigation by Editor Russ Stanton after The Smoking Gun Web site reported that the newspaper had been conned by a prisoner who doctored the documents.

The subjects of the article claimed they had been defamed by the article.

Stanton says the paper will continue its investigation into the documents and the report.
