Bus crash suspect’s trial will stay in Willmar

A judge has refused to move the trial of a woman charged in a fatal school bus crash in southwestern Minnesota.

Judge David Peterson rejected a defense request to move the trial from Kandiyohi County in Willmar to Hennepin County.

Olga Marina Franco del Cid is charged with four counts of criminal vehicular homicide. She’s accused of driving a van that crashed into a school bus last February near Cottonwood, killing four Lakeview School students.

Franco contends it was her boyfriend who was driving the van. He hasn’t been found.

The judge also issued an order allowing statements made by Franco to law enforcement at a Marshall hospital to be used at her trial. Her attorney argued those statements were not voluntary and that Franco should have received a Miranda warning.

Franco’s trial is scheduled to start July 28 in Willmar.
